Earlier, 11.55am: A man has appeared in Tauranga court today charged with the murder of Whakamārama man, Eli Johnston.

The man, who has interim name suppression, was arrested by police in Willow Street on Sunday July 24. He was in possession of weapons and attempted to resist arrest.

He will next appear in Tauranga High Court on August 10.

Johnson, 27, died at a house in rural Tauranga on Sunday June 12.

Emergency services were called to his home around 8.35pm, and Johnson was found at the address with critical injuries.

Johnston had been facing multiple drug charges, and was about to be sentenced for fleeing police custody when he died.

He was also due to be sentenced for breaching the conditions of his intensive supervision - a community-based sentence handed down to offenders deemed likely to re-offend, which aims to help with reintegration and rehabilitation.

'Intensive” supervision is reserved for medium-to-high risk offenders. It includes stringent monitoring requirements to probation officers, and is a stronger version of regular community supervision.
