Diseased trees to be removed from Blake Park

A large stand of cypress trees will be removed from a Mount Maunganui park next week.

Tauranga City Council says the trees are affected by a disease called cypress canker and will be removed from Blake Park from Wednesday, July 13.

The removal process is expected to be completed by Friday, July 15, says a council spokesperson.

"The canker is irreversible, and the stand, located near the netball and tennis courts, cannot be saved.

"If they are not removed, the disease could potentially spread to other trees and may become a safety risk.

"Cypress canker is a slow, degenerative disease and the trees do not pose a safety risk to people or animals currently.

"Tauranga City Council is working with the current users of Blake Park on future development options, and the planting of new/replacement trees will be considered as part of this work."

Get rid of them

What purpose do those trees have anyway. Get rid of all the trees surrounding Blake Park and put in some decent parking, no brainer. Why do Councils plant trees in the most stupid places, they make a mess, block out the sun and their roots damage infrastructure, who thinks up these stupid placements of trees, Tauranga City Council is so lacking common sense when it comes to getting a city moving forward it is beyond belief, city planners are years behind in roading, housing, public transport and think grandiose spending is going to liven up an already congested Tauranga, how these people stay in their jobs is beyond me, get Tauranga moving with the basics before anything else. It's already lagging behind by 20 years of doing nothing when it was needed.
