The Electoral Commission has released the official results for the Tauranga parliamentary by-election today.

The election, held on Saturday, June 18, gave the opportunity for those in the Tauranga electorate to vote for their next MP.

National Party candidate Sam Uffindell won the seat vacated by Simon Bridges, with a total of 11,613 votes.

He was followed by the Labour Party candidate Jan Tinetti, who had a total of 5,259 votes. ACT Party candidate Cameron Luxton had the third highest vote count, with a total of 2,133.

Of the formal candidates listed, Gordon Dickson had the least amount of votes, with nine in total.

Of the 51,706 people enrolled, a total of 20,941 votes were cast. Including the 157 disallowed votes, this gives a voter turnout of 40.5 per cent.

The turnout of the Tauranga by-election is similar to recent by-elections. Out of the most recent by-elections, Northcote had a 43.9 per cent turnout, Mt Albert had a 30 per cent turnout, and Mt Roskill had a 38.5 per cent turnout.

The Electoral Commission expects to return the writ showing the successful candidate on Thursday, July 7, assuming there are no recounts.

Expected closer race for the lead, but at least the fringe with their divisive community policies failed with a whimper.

Mandatory Voting

Incredible as it may seem, with all the problems in Tauranga, only 13% of the electorate bothered to vote. I wonder what the result would have been if voting had been compulsory - we'll never know.
