Tauranga by-election: Uffindell leading

Update, 7.15pm: National Party candidate Sam Uffindell is leading in the Tauranga by-election with 52.5 per cent of the vote counted so far.

Preliminary results show that 14,156 votes have been counted, with Uffindell in the lead with 8383 votes and Labour List MP Jan Tinetti coming second with 3442 votes.

ACT Party candidate Cameron Luxton is coming third with 1391 votes and NZ Outdoors and Freedom Party candidate Sue Grey in fourth place with 535 votes.

The preliminary results are from advance voting from June 4 - 17.

Update, 7.10pm: National Party candidate Sam Uffindell is leading in the Tauranga by-election with 12.5 per cent of the vote counted so far.

Preliminary results in show that 6215 votes have been counted so far, with Uffindell in the lead with 3769 votes and Labour List MP Jan Tinetti coming second with 1406 votes.

ACT Party candidate Cameron Luxton is coming third with 616 votes and NZ Outdoors and Freedom Party candidate Sue Grey in fourth place with 248 votes.

This is not the formal declaration of results.

The Electoral Commission declares the results of the official count by publishing a notice in the NZ Gazette.

The official results (including special declaration and overseas votes) of the Tauranga By-election 2022 are expected to be available on Friday July 1.

Earlier, 7.05pm: The Tauranga by-election voting booths have closed and results of voting are expected to be known this evening.

Preliminary election results will become available here on SunLive progressively from 7pm.

Targets for release of the preliminary election results are:

  • by 9pm results from 50 per cent of voting places.
  • by 10.30pm results from 95 per cent of voting places.

The Electoral Commission aims to have the official results for the Tauranga by-election published on Friday July 1.

The Tauranga seat was made vacant by the resignation from Parliament of National MP Simon Bridges, in April.

There are 12 candidates contesting the seat.

The candidates are: ONE Party's Allan Cawood, Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party's Christopher Coker, independent candidates Tony Corbett and Gordon Dickson, NZ Outdoors and Freedom Party's Sue Grey, New National Party's Andrew Hollis, New Conservative's Helen Houghton, independent Yvette Lamare, ACT New Zealand's Cameron Luxton, Labour Party's Jan Tinetti, National Party's Sam Uffindell and independent Peter Wakeman.

Thank goodness it's a long time resident who understands first hand the issues the city faces, rather than someone who's been here about a year, making the most of Simon throwing his toys at National and bailing . He knows the city so well..... his contribution to the city so far has been anonymity....how convenient.
