Cameron Road reopens after gas main strike

Update, 4.41pm: Cameron Road is now open with traffic flowing after a previous closure from a gas main leak.

Earlier, following a contractor hitting a gas line in Greerton near Kent Street, Cameron Road was closed.

Traffic diversions were put in place between Sheppard Street and Cornwall Streets.

The road has now been reopened.

Earlier, 10.55am: Emergency services are responding to a gas main strike in Gate Pa.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says firefighters are dealing with what appears to be a gas main struck on Cameron Road, near Kent Street.

"It looks like they may need to close the road. People should avoid the area."

A Tauranga City Council spokesperson says part of Cameron Road is blocked.

"Due to a contractor hitting a gas line in Greerton near Kent Street, Cameron Road is currently closed.

"Diversions have been put in place between Sheppard Street and Cornwall Streets. Traffic is still slowly flowing around the area.

"It is unknown at this time when the road is expected to be reopened.

"But an early report is that it could be closed for at least two hours."

A police spokesperson says officers are in the area assisting with traffic management.
