Former National Party leader Simon Bridges is set to take the reins of the prestigious business lobby group Auckland Business Chamber.

Outgoing CEO Michael Barnett is set to stand down in August after a 31-year reign that began in 1991.

A media release put out by the chamber says Barnett would retain a role with the chamber in several of their initiatives, including mental health project First Steps.

There was speculation that Bridges was taking over from Barnett after he made a high-profile leave from parliament and moved to Auckland, including landing an audio show with Stuff.

Bridges declined to comment on the speculation at the time.

Barnett spoke to Stuff about stepping down, saying he'd had 'on and off” conversations with Bridges for the last couple of years and was looking to hand the reins to somebody younger with different perspectives.

'I certainly like his leadership style and the board have enjoyed the occasions when they've connected with him,” he says

'A big part of how well business does is the environment Government provides. Simon is already familiar with the Government role, he has a great network of both political and business people. It does put him in a good position to build our advocacy role.”

Barnett's decision to step down was due to a combination of things, he says. He felt the chamber could benefit from a different environment, as could his family with having more time with him.

'When I look at the chambers, it's in good heart at the moment and had a good two years around Covid-19 with supporting business, being a voice for business, so I look at that and look at the future,” he said.

'I think we're going to have a different environment of operating for the next couple of years.”

Pity

Simon doing alright for himself but a pity he couldn't have seen the job through he was elected for and well paid for. Instead we have an expensive and therefore unnecessary by election. By elections should only be for dire consequences not to get a job. No doubt he has served well but disappointing to have created an electoral vacancy. Would have been easier to promote the next National list member but I guess not allowed ?
