Council closer to Ōmokoroa Intersection funding

If approved, the $38.4m application would see the construction of an interim solution to the safety and capacity issues at the State Highway 2/Ōmokoroa intersection.

Western Bay of Plenty District Council's plan to deliver a State Highway 2/Ōmokoroa Intersection is one step closer to securing $38 million to significantly upgrade the intersection.

Council's $38.4 million application will now progress to the negotiation stage of the $1 billion Infrastructure Acceleration Fund (IAF), Kāinga Ora announced this week.

If approved, the $38.4m application would see the construction of an interim solution to the safety and capacity issues at the State Highway 2/Ōmokoroa intersection.

The proposal is seen as a minimum 10-year solution until funding is available to build a full interchange.

Western Bay Mayor Garry Webber says while this does not mean that the proposal will automatically receive funding, this is a big step forward for the Western Bay

'We aren't quite across the line just yet, but it is exciting nonetheless given the history of this infrastructure project following countless push backs and funding limitations.

'We are delighted Kāinga Ora see the value, and criticality, this piece of infrastructure will do to fix the safety issues of this intersection and support new housing supply in Ōmokoroa.

'The Infrastructure Acceleration Fund is a competitive process with many aspiring projects infrastructure projects right across New Zealand. We are grateful we have presented a case with solid evidence to get central government to understand our needs.”

Initially submitting an Expression of Interest for $150 million for the long term interchange solution, Council reduced this to $38.4 million through stage two of the application process, presenting an interim solution to the safety and capacity issues at the State Highway 2 Ōmokoroa intersection.

'In order to make our bid more competitive in an oversubscribed field of applications, we worked with Waka Kotahi staff to identify a less costly option (total of $48.6m) that would provide a solution for up to 15 years' growth in dwellings.

'While it is a 10-year solution until funding is available to build a full interchange this is the next best thing to try and this longstanding commitment to our community of getting this project underway.”

As part of the negotiation stage Council will work with Kāinga Ora on some key matters including the confirmation of co-funding sources including Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency Director of Regional Relationships, David Speirs says moving a step closer will be welcome news for the Western Bay community, improving safety on this intersection is essential to support the growth of Ōmokoroa and unlock much-needed housing.

'We were pleased to support the preliminary design and approach put forward as part of the application process, and acknowledge the recognition from the IAF to support this much-needed upgrade.”

Tinkering

The govt/council tinker with our roads while the real problems are the multi kilometre queues of traffic that build up at peak times. People joke about Auckland traffic being bad, but, Tauranga is far worse than Auckland now.

So Labour took the Takitimu northern link off the works schedule that was to link Tauranga with Omokoroa. This is stop gap cheap replacement. Cap in hand shuffling to finance a temporary solution. I think people north of the city and those who travel that way should remember this governments action when they vote in the by election and more importantly the next general election.

Solution?

An interim solution is not a solution. Millions of dollars spent now, to spend millions of dollars to rip it out later and perhaps do the job properly in years to come when it'll cost millions more in consultation and millions more to do and more lives lost and families destroyed. The solution is simple: DO THE JOB ONCE AND DO IT PROPERLY.

Just another a Labour failure

So it appears that it's a forgone conclusion that it's going to be a Roundabout as opposed to the original overbridge with 4 sliplanes. If it took over two years to build the TePuna Roundabout then we've got years of further danger and delays ahead. This along with NZTA's silly speed limit reduction and the Northern Arterial Link being years away from completion combined with even further subdivision north of the city will see traffic queues backed up past Paeroa. All of this infrastructure should've been put in place before any subdivision was allowed to commence. We can thank Winston Peters for giving us a Labour/Greens Government.

The final cost (came in under-budget and within the projected time-frame) to build a four-lane flyover and associated roundabout under it, upgrade seven on and off slip-roads, relocate four HT power pylons, and keep traffic flowing. Where? Perth, WA. Seems that Waka Kotahi could take some useful lessons from Australia.

Gary's Excited... Really!

"a big step forward for the Western Bay" How, Mr Mayor can this be a big step forward? or even remotely exciting. Stop greasing up to the clowns in Wellington just to try & grab a few bread crumbs. Call it like is is. A bloody waste of money now leading to a huge spend of money in 10 years. How many times does it need to be said? Fix it properly... Fix it once

Set up a Stop Sign Camera at the intersection and fine all those that run it. The coffers will be full in no time!

Minimum 10 years!!

Why didn't they say minimum 40 years because that's what it will be. They will plonk a roundabout at the intersection, cause even more delays and we'll have to live with it for another 40 years. All the while, Labour will blame Nats, Nats will blame Labour for pulling the funding and us residents and road users are caught in the middle. You can also bet your bottom dollar that this will involve a reduction in the speed limit for a significant stretch of the road leading up to the intersection . that's NZTAs answer to everything these days!!! Agree totally with comments on here especially CamelToeKid.

Kainga Ora or Waka Kotahi

What does Kainga Ora have to do with infrastructure investment, I would say Omokoroa residents should be aware of what deal is being struck. Is this a 'Kainga Ora you guys cover this roading work, and we will allow you to build cheap transition housing in this peaceful community'. I hope Western BOP council will be transparent as to the terms and conditions of this arrangement.
