A man who allegedly blew four times the legal limit when breath-tested by police in Tauranga this month is due in court today on numerous driving related offences.
The man is due to appear in the Tauranga District Court charged with driving with excess breath alcohol, driving with excess blood alcohol, dangerous driving and other driving related offences.
Police say the man blew 1688 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath – the adult limit is 400 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath – when he was pulled over and breath tested on July 19.
A week later, the man was pulled over again and arrested after police say he blew 1429 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.
Police say the incidents are 'deeply concerning” and the man should have been 'clinically dead” with having such a high breath alcohol limit.
Police report around 5923 compulsory breath tests and 2743 mobile breath tests are carried out in New Zealand each day.
Of those tested, 100 people are charged with drink driving, according to New Zealand Police statistics from 2010.
The highest breath alcohol reading on record was a woman who blew 2111 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.
The Bay of Plenty is one of five regions to have recorded the top five blood alcohol recordings from the past five years – the limit is 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood.

These kind of drivers need to be removed from our roads. They need help with their addiction BUT cannot be trusted out on the streets. Detain them for everyone's safety.

Penalties need to be tougher for drunk drivers - its too easy for these people. Imagine how many times they do it without getting caught. One too many.
Lock him up!

Disqualify him for life and give him a prison sentence. He is a potential murderer when let loose on our roads and should be dealt with as such! But I guess it will be another slap on the wrist again from our weak legal system.
