Power is out to several hundred homes in the Western Bay of Plenty this morning.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says power is out in Omanawa following reports of power lines coming down on trees on Belk Road.

According to Powerco, 378 properties lost power around 8am.

Estimated restoration time is around 12.15pm.

Northern fire communications shift manager Peter Stevenson says that a powerline falling on some trees caused sparks, but the power cut prevented the sparks from becoming a fire.

"The fire has self-extinguished, and the power cut has sorted everything out,” says Peter.

Meanwhile, 309 properties in Rangiuru are also without power.

Powerco reports that a site investigation is underway into the cause and estimates power to be back on around 11am.

There are also 88 properties in Papamoa Beach reported to have no power this morning.
