An anonymous donation of the highest craftsmanship has led Fire and Emergency New Zealand staff in Tauranga to a fundraising goal close to one senior member's heart.
Staff at Tauranga Fire Station got a surprise when an unannounced package was discovered at their headquarters doorstep shortly before 7am on Saturday, February 5.
A cubby-sized fire truck, lovingly hand-crafted, had been dropped off overnight with a note pinned to it suggesting it might be of use to the FENZ staff and, if not, could perhaps be a perfect donation to the boys and girls at Starship Children's Hospital in Auckland.
After reaching out, senior station officer Len Sabin says Starship informed him they simply didn't have the room for the little engine, named ‘Flick' after the beloved children's book. There was no room at the firehouse either for the little engine that could.
'We don't really have a use for it,” says Len. 'It is more like a cubby house or something that would be good in a daycare centre.”
So instead, Len and FENZ have listed the gift, which comes complete with working sprinklers, on TradeMe - with 100 per cent of the money raised going to Starship.
'I felt like if I didn't get something for Starship it would have ended up just sitting in our firehouse with us just scratching our heads wondering what to do with it,” admits Len.
Made from folded acrylic the truck is picking up momentum online.
The note specifically mentioned helping out Starship, which made Len determined to ensure it benefitted the hospital in some way.
He also had personal motivation to see the proceeds of the nameless benefactor's hard work head down the fire pole to the paediatric hospital.
'One of my kids spent time in Starship a number of years ago,” Len explains.
'So I felt compelled to do something with it.”
The truck may not be putting out any fires anytime soon. It's wheels are just for show.
However, that does not detract from its quality. Flick is made from folded acrylic, so is weather-proof, and at 2.4m long, 1.2m wide and 1.45m high is quite a big little truck - even if its Scania cousins tower over him.
'It is incredibly well made, professionally made,” says Len, again thanking whoever was responsible.
'It is incredibly crafted and for it to turn up anonymously is a pretty selfless gift which is nice to see.”
The winning bidder has also been offered free transportation to anywhere in New Zealand with the current bid standing at $3000.
The auction closes on Saturday, March 5, and with nearly 100 bids and 300 people watching Flick is in high demand.
