A New Plymouth couple wanted by police in relation to a stabbing are now behind bars.

Police issued an information appeal earlier this week for the couple, who were believed to have been in Tauranga.

Stuff had reported that they were being sought in relation to a stabbing of a 19-year-old in New Plymouth last weekend.

Emergency services were called to Cook St, Marfell, for an assault around 2.25pm on Sunday.

A 19-year-old man was taken to Taranaki Base Hospital in a critical condition.

Police say they have now arrested the 37-year-old New Plymouth man and 27-year-old woman accused of the incident.

'Both have been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and assaulting with intent to injure,” says a police spokesperson.

'They appeared in New Plymouth District Court on Thursday and have been remanded in custody.”
