Women's golf—18 holes
Warm sunshine and not much wind made pleasant golfing conditions for the first Spiers Beach Cup round on Saturday September 25. The course was stretched out in preparation for the next day's Club championship finals, and the greens were hard, fast and treacherous. Hidden Holes: Georgia Mustard 8 points.
It was cold and blustery with a squall or two on Wednesday September 30 for LGU 8, Karl Wilson Buttons and the Strokeplay Championship second round. Even so there was some excellent scoring. Club Championship finals
Probably one of the most important fixtures on any Club's programme is the Championships, when the two best players in each division or section vie for a place on the Honours' Board. It is no mean feat to reach finals, having ploughed through the opposition all the way through each match, and each winner should wear the title of Champion with great pride. Early on Sunday September 26 it was overcast and showery as the matches got underway, but after a few holes the rain eased off and the rest of the day was quite pleasant.
In the Senior Men's match Andy Roche after 18 holes was four holes up on Matt Griffiths, five up after 29, and won the match four up with three to play. Intermediate: Dave Foster after 18 holes was five up on Fred Frauendorf, two up after 29 holes, all square after 36, and went on to win the match 1 up on the 38th hole. In the Juniors Mike Matutinovich was four up on John Giffney after 18 and 29 holes, and held on to win the match four up with three to play.
Women over 36 holes: In the Silver Division Carol Leary versus Michelle Libby's match had its ups and downs and it took Carol five holes to gain a foothold against determined opposition, but from then on she maintained the pressure all the way to be eight up after 18 holes, and won the match seven up. In the Bronze 1 match Phillipa Harvey was three up on Sarah Tomsett after 18 holes, and then stepped up her game to finish seven up on the 29th hole.
The Bronze 2 and 3 matches were played over 18 holes—Bronze 2: Kathy Ashton won her match against Rae Wright on the 18th hole. Bronze 3: Jill Morrison beat Tina Berg six holes up, playing outstanding golf and for a player with only eight months golfing experience it was probably the most remarkable event of the day.
Nine hole Championship—Division 1: Lorraine Meyer by default through injury. Division 2: Helen Brady b Julia Nicolson two up. Men: Norm Sanderson b Rex Smith 2 up.
Veterans' golf
Despite there being many Vets playing competitions on other courses, there were still 43 in the field on Monday September 27 playing Individual stableford competition. Results: Richard Still 40 points; Allen Smith 39; Bruce Rutter, Brian Baynes 38; Mavis Bruce 37; Gary Dunlop, Michael Bonnici 36; Adrienne Lynch, Dennis Tanner, Bill Tiffin, John Giffney, Kathy Ashton, Howard Anderson, Gerry Tompkins, Francis Gascoigne 35; Peter Robertson, Kerry Lewis, Robert Arrol, Edna Connolly 34; Peter Maria, John Purkis, Kaylene Croker, Peter Hewitt, Pete Rowe 33; Dot Ramsey, Jenny O'Dwyer, Tom Wallace, Helen Baynes, Eddie Bruce 32; Mark Mora, Rodger Gudsell, Willie Lynch, Avon Gordon 31; John Newton 30. Twos: Allen Smith on 8 and 15; Bruce Rutter on 8.
Allen Sarjant played the Men's Matchplay final versus Andrew McLennan over 18 holes, and it was surely a match to be remembered. Andrew was five holes up at half way, when Allen switched into top gear and relentlessly clawed the holes back, and from then on it was a tussle to the 18 where Allen's experience won the hole. Congratulations—it was a great match. Helen Baynes b Nan Hoggard on 17 in the Women's Matchplay semifinal, and will go on to play Bev Ireland in the final.
