Four arrested after Tauranga anti-lockdown protest

Four people have been arrested in Tauranga after failing to move on from an anti-lockdown protest earlier today.

New Zealand Police Commissioner Andrew Coster says the quartet were among a larger group of 20.

The protest was taking place outside the Tauranga Central Police Station and was one of a handful across New Zealand today.

“We have attended protest activity in Nelson, Tauranga and Auckland today,” says Coster.

“In Tauranga, we arrested four people following an anti-lockdown protest outside Tauranga police station. It was a group of around 20 and four declined to move on.”

Police say they made a number of attempts to engage with those gathered outside the station.

Charging decisions have yet to be made, says a police statement,

Coster confirms that four arrests were also made in Auckland. The crowd in Nelson dispersed.

“We have a low tolerance for unlawful gatherings particularly in the context of a Delta variant outbreak,” he says.

“People can expect we will move more quickly to enforcement action in that context.”

Coster also reiterates a need not to be distracted by the minority not following lockdown restrictions, in light of the seven cases of Covid-19 currently detected in the community.

"We will deal with them," he says.

Apart from the blatantly obvious medical benefits of this lockdown, please enlighten us as to how this government is covertly controlling us because, guite frankly, your generalised statement, "Socialist’s agenda of increasing their control over the population, increasing the population’s dependence on the government and stripping basic human rights such as freedom of speech and freedom to gather." is just that, ’generalised’, and holds no water. So please explain why our freedom of speech has ’not’ been removed from, say for instance, these pages, Facebook, multimedia, correctly conducted protests, Q&A on T.V. general news stories, magazines, news papers, Fargo, just to name a few?

Have you noticed your circle of friends deminishing. Does this not hint at the possibility you may have endorsed a little too much of the extremely radical thinking that only belongs in a Hollywood Movie. The free thinking analytical mind of a democratic society like ours recognises the advice and data coming from very credible scientists. After all, 10 reputable background checked virologists are more believable than one proclaiming imposter off the internet.

No, Andrew64, listen to YOURSELF.

Your paranoia is showing and you’re trying to make a Health issue into a Political one. NOBODY, not even our "Communist Leader" is suggesting that the Laws required for Lockdown will be permanent, or that you will not be allowed Freedom of Speech or protest. These are necessary actions to address a lifedeath virus. (Certainly, Hate Speech Laws may limit your freedom of speech, but that has nothing to do with Corona or Lockdown.) Calm down, enjoy the time in isolation, even if it IS enforced. The virus will pass, and so will the restrictions.

Listen to yourselves

You all are endorsing the Socialist’s agenda of increasing their control over the population, increasing the population’s dependence on the government and stripping basic human rights such as freedom of speech and freedom to gather. The leader will be thrilled to read your comments. If we go into lockdown every time we get a community case we will be a hermit state. We are becoming more like North Korea every day; quite possibly by design, to retain power for as long as possible.

Come down on them hard like the Aussie police. I’m fed up with people breaking the law where the penalty MAY be a fine...and never getting the fine. If we can use the fines to buy more PPE and ventilators, so much the better.

Chances are they’d all be perfectly fine.

It would be nice if you could put them all in a room and introduce them to the virus and leave them to cure themselves.

Good arrest them all and heavy fines

No hope can’t fix stupid

Really...?

I guess we can all pile on and call them anything that we want, because it’s unlikely that they’ll be able to read the comments. Although I don’t agree with 99.9% of the actions of this useless collection of wannabe politicians, it might eventuate that on this occasion they’re correct because of the stupidity of our population.... Their target audience of course.... The stupid ones

Charge The Idiots

Throw the book at them. Forget about warnings, they were warned last night at the lockdown announcement. Don’t think about charging them just charge them with everything you can. These are the sort of idiots that cost lives. No reasonable excuse to be out and are therefore in violation.

And now
