Whoa to Go - Play the course backwards

There were 21 teams in the field on Sunday, July 18 to play the fifth Whoa-To- Go (Play the Course Backwards) tournament, generously sponsored by Craigs Investment Partners.

Organisers Tim Parish and Jacquie Bain are to be congratulated on their superb organization, with no stone left unturned to ensure that the day ran smoothly.

A tremendous amount of work and imagination was necessary to set up the tournament, and the greens staff went out of their way to be helpful. Detailed maps and instruction sheets were necessary for each team, for starting at the wrong end of a fairway and playing to different greens was akin to playing a totally different course in a foreign country.

It was great fun, and the Ambrose format was very popular, with specific rules regarding order of play. Some spectacular scores were returned and in each team handicaps were combined, added, divided and calculated by some mathematical experts to determine winners and runners up. Best of all—the nasty weather that was forecast held off until people were in their cars and heading home.

Prizes were awarded by Craigs Investment Partners representative Todd Blythe to:

Winners: A Team: Carol Leary, Daryll Denyer, David P Campbell, Paul Williams 61.00 nett.

Runners up: Doing Nothing All Morning: Susan Gurr, John Eliott, Steve Parker, Charles Gurr 61.4.

Due to very bad weather, there was no competitive play for women on Saturday, July 17, but on Wednesday, July 21, it was cool and calm with overcast skies until the last four holes of play when the heavens opened in a heavy shower, saturating everyone still on the course. There was a stableford haggle, and putts had to be counted for the last Houston Putting Cup round.

Expol Sponsored Teams tournament

On Friday, July 23 there were 29 teams of four in the field for this popular tournament very generously sponsored by Terry Mischefski of Expol, the largest manufacturer and distributor of polystyrene products in New Zealand.

As with any tournament, much work goes on behind scenes to ensure that the day runs smoothly, and the Ladies' Committee, Club Manager, Caterer and Greens staff and House cleaner are all to be congratulated for the part they played in making this day so successful.

Players came from Hamilton, Omokoroa, Ngaruawahia, Omokoroa, Paeroa, Thames, Taumaranui, Morrinsville, Paeroa, Mount Maunganui, Cambridge, Fairview and Waihi.

It was a stableford competition, and each team's three of four scores counted for the final result—which eased pressure on a player who had a bad hole, or more.

The weather was fine and mild with little wind, and apart from some greens that caused a little consternation with many having difficulty coping with tricky pin placements resulting in multiple putts, it was all taken in good spirit. That's golf, and was regarded by all as a good day. The Sales table was laden the usual variety of acceptable items, plus an unusual but very popular change from the norm with many packages of ready-made, ready-to-make meals, cakes, soups and sauces with recipes attached.

Jim Jesney Pairs' combined stableford results: Peter Hewitt and Brian Robinson 70 points; Terry Gerbich and Tom Wallace 69; Earle White and Allen Sarjant, John Purkis and Bob Hoggard , Mark Mora and Francis Gascoigne 67; Howard Anderson and Ken Mustard, Gerry Tompkins and Bruce Rutter 66.

Nine-hole golf

The rain held off almost long enough for 17 Nine-holers to finish a Mixed stableford Haggle on Tuesday July 20, and the excited whooping and hollering from the only person to score a two on the day (her first) could have been heard all over the course. Congratulations.
