Waihi golf report for June 3 2021

Mixed events

A higher authority took control on Saturday, May 29 by turning on overcast skies and heavy rain and aborting the Greenkeepers' Revenge event. All the devious scheming and work that had been put in to make the course as nasty as possible will no doubt be put on hold until another day, or maybe next year. Even so, many thanks to Martin and his band of merry men for spending time stretching the course out.

Women's golf - 18 holes

Prior to setting forth for a day on the golf course on Wednesday, June 2, a fair-sized group of enthusiastic golfers were treated to a demonstration of suitable exercises to loosen the muscles, warm up the body and prepare the mind by Katikati's Physiotherapist Michael Heenan. A golf club was a necessary aid, and everyone went along happily with the exercises, with varying degrees of skill, and at the end found to their surprise how much warmer and supple, they were. Then one bright spark suggested that as there was time before being called to the tee, we should do it all again! And we did - but some opted out!

After the pre-game warm-up, very necessary in the three degrees air, one would have expected many scores to be in the 40 stableford region, but exhaustion may have set in before the day's end after so much pre-game activity. Nevertheless, there were some very good scores in the stableford haggle. Results: Sarah Tomsett, Karen Diggelmann, Helen Baynes 37 points; Bev Ireland 36; Anke Hermannsdorfer, Jill Austin, Suzanne Burns, Mavis Bruce, Denise McConnon 34; Susan Mustard, Jacquie Bain, Wendy Matutinovich 33; Jan Robinson, Carol Leary, Billie-Jo Simmons, Diane Lockwood 32; Nan Hoggard, Sally Grindlay, Karen Lee, Sue White 31; Rosalind Giffney, Jenny Tubman, Kathy Ashton 30. Hidden Holes: Suzanne Burns, Jenny Tubman: 8 points. Twos; Diane Lockwood on 8. Katikati Dreamers Beauty Clinic Player of the week: Sarah Tomsett.

Veterans' golf

True to forecast, after a bleak start and a cold shower or two on Monday, May 31 it was a surprisingly good day for an individual stableford competition with 41 players in the field, but not many women this time. Results: Earle White 41 points; Gary Dunlop 38; Jim Evans, Allen Sarjant 37; Tim Parish, Des Crene 36; Gyan Prole, David Croker, Peter Wright 35; Peter Hewitt, Ross Fitness, Bob Hoggard, Peter Robertson 34; Wayne Gamble, Ken Purcell, Rae Brown 33; Rae Wright, Rodger Bagshaw, Sarah Tomsett 32; Jacquie Bain, Andrew McLennan, Kerry Lewis, John Purkis, Robyn Kirby 31; John Saunders, Richard Still, Eddie Bruce, Dot Ramsey, Mark Mora, Mavis Bruce 30. Twos: Peter Robertson on 8; David Croker, Ross Fitness, Dot Ramsey on 15.

Nine-hole golf

It was a glorious day for the first day of winter on Tuesday, June 1, and may it be a positive omen for many Tuesdays to come instead of days with relentless need for raincoats and umbrellas.

Division 2: Margaret Meldrum 19; Jill Morrison Snr 17;, Eleanor Koedyk, Sue Ryan both 16.
