Vocal gymnastics of Ruby Frost

If you like your rhythm and blues served with a twist of soulful rock you would have loved Dan Leigh and the Libres warm-up act prior to Ruby Frost's performance last night at Major Toms.

Dan and his crew played a dozen or so original melodies reminiscent of Tom Petty, although, to be fair, Dan's take on R & B can only be described as inspired. Keep an eye on these kids as they just may be the next big thing to come out of the Bay.

If you haven't had the pleasure yet check out their youtube footage taken at a previous gig:

When Ruby Frost took to the stage a little after 9pm the 200-plus crowd was well and truly ready to rock.

Ruby overcame challenging venue acoustics to belt out most of her Volition album including her debut single Moonlight .

The single stayed on the bFM radio station's top-ten list for ten consecutive weeks after being released and will be running through my mind at least until I get my hands on a copy of the album.

If the Olympics had a category for music, Ruby's vocal gymnastics would certainly secure New Zealand gold.

With a couple of new songs thrown into the mix, which we might look forward to hearing on her follow-up album, fans were left chanting for more around 10pm.

After the enthusiastic crowd finally let the three-piece retire for the night, Ruby was gracious enough to mingle with the crowd and accept their adulation in the style of a seasoned princess of pop.

Ruby first came to the attention of audiophiles after winning the nationwide MTV 42Unheard competition in 2009.

She is currently signed to Universal Music NZ and is also the winner of the Grand Prize for the Pop category in Section I of the international 2010 John Lennon Song writing Contest, with her song 'Hazy'.

In 2010, Ruby went to the US to perform at the infamous Viper Room.

Ruby is from a musical family with parents who run the annual Christian Parachute Music Festival in Hamilton, New Zealand.
