Police are investigating claims that someone shot at a boat near Motiti Island.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says his friend had been shot at on his boat while he was near Motiti Island on Tuesday afternoon.

He says people had been swimming near the boat with the shots were fired.

A police spokesperson confirms they received a report to the incident at 1.35pm.

'The call was in relation to a firearm being discharged from Motiti Island toward a boat that had stopped off the coast of the island.

'No one was injured and there was no damage to the boat.

'Police spoke with the victim and are making follow-up enquiries.”

No arrests have been made at this stage.
