Cordons lifted in BOP town

UPDATE 3.16PM: Cordons have been stood down following a fleeing driver incident in Kawerau.

The incident began in the Freyberg Street area about 11.20am, says a police spokesperson.

"The vehicle involved was located in Newell Street about 11.45am, however, police are still seeking the driver.

"Anyone who sees anything suspicious in the area is urged to contact Police on 105."

People are being asked to avoid the central business district of a Bay of Plenty town today following a police pursuit.

Police are looking for a person of interest following a fleeing driver incident in Kawerau.

"A vehicle failed to stop for Police in the Freyberg Street area about 11.20am and a pursuit was initiated," says a police spokesperson.

"Police lost sight of the vehicle however it was later located abandoned in Newell Street.

"Cordons are in place in the central business district and people are asked to avoid the area.

"Nearby schools have been notified as a precaution."

Anyone who sees anything suspicious is urged to contact Police.

Emergency information can be reported to 111.

Non-emergency information can be phoned into the police's 105 number.
