Cannabis ‘scaremongering’

In reply to M Murray-Benge, the writer's reasoning skills are part of the problem, not of the solution. The writer shares reefer madness misinformation left over from cannabis prohibition.

The arguments are flimsy at best and part of a mindset stuck in the mid twentieth century.

The fact of harm to self and to the community is far lower for cannabis than most other drugs including legal ones: alcohol and tobacco.

There is no lethal dose for cannabis, and it can be administered in different ways than smoking, such as tinctures, balms and creams.

The majority of people that smoke cannabis have no issues and are part of our modern society.

In the present, we have an unregulated market that is running on a tax-free black market system. Anyone can buy it, no ID check and no quality control.

If regulated, we can use education to inform, regulation for purchasing, health systems for any issues and taxation to build GDP, jobs and growth.

To try and scare-monger readers is misplaced and misinformed.

To regulate the market and create tax revenue meanwhile pointing heavy users towards the health system is the smarter vision.

To many, the objectives of the cannabis referendum are just and fair to all citizens. Therefore I will be voting "Yes" in this year's cannabis referendum.

........chestnut being dragged out again for another thrashing....'Alcohol and tobacco'...yes legalised and causing ongoing issues in our society amongst many. The fact that it is, does NOT make it right, and although we all have our vices, do we really want to support yet another drug that will yet plunge our country into yet more problems accociated with cannabis use? I note the writer mentions 'tinctures, balms and creams' ...this is already taken care of within the framework of 'medicinal cannabis' and is part of law...so do not be fooled....medicinal cannabis is not part of the upcomong vote as most stoners would have you think, it is self centred wishes and will lead to major societal problems. Therefore I will be voting "NO" in this years cannabis referendum. ( which is 'non-binding' and will ultimately result in a conscience vote at some stage, depending on it's makeup)

Deluded

If you think that under age kids will not be able to get their hands on weed with this system YOU ARE DELUDED. Talk to the teachers that work in Alternative Education organisations. The kids that go to them can't function in normal schools because they have a weed addiction. My 15 yr old Grandson is one of them. We have tried to get him into re-hab. What a joke, if they don't want to go they don't have to. This is because of the HUMAN RIGHTS. So how is the mental health system supposed to cope with all the people that **** up their brains with this stuff.

No to weed

As a "hands on tools" manager of men from 1970 I cant remember the number of times I sent men off the job and/or sacked others for endangering their workmates because of their use of cannabis. After 20 years I then became self employed and this time, another 20 years was spent contracted to work EVERY day in the houses most vulnerable to the use f this drug. I watched pre-schoolers to young adults breathing this stuff in every day with them thinking it was quite normal being off your brain with no ambition ,energy or will to better their lives. Do not listen to the so called experts who come up with all these statistics when they haven't been out there to see the harm and misery this causes to our society.

Another poison to partake

The problems we have with alcohol & tobacco then we can add another fuel to the fire? D Carey must have smoked this weed and has fried his/her common sense and cannot think straight which is what happens when you are high. This is what is happening to young kids in Holland turning up to school stoned as young as 10yrs. Australia has a huge problem where in some places cannabis has overtaken drink driving. I wander D Carey if you would have the same opinion if one of your family was killed by a cannabis driver. Keep NZ drug free. K Smith
