UPDATE: Fire crews have been battling a grass fire in Welcome Bay this afternoon.

Fire and Emergency northern communications shift manager Colin Underdown says they were notified of the grass fire on Kairua Road around 3pm.

"The fire was 80 metres by 40 metres."

Crew members used three high pressure hose reels to put out the blaze.

It was put out around 3.30pm.

Earlier: Reports are coming in of a scrub fire near Welcome Bay this afternoon.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says firefighters are battling a fire on Kairua Road.

"There are hoses across the road."

Police have been called to help with traffic control.

Motorists are advised to avoid using this road or to expect delays in the area.
