Harington St transport hub’s future to be debated

The future of the abandoned Harington Street Transport Hub building is expected to be discussed at a Tauragna City Council committee meeting on Tuesday.

Construction began on the seven-storey transport hub in June 2018.

In May 2019, council was informed of a technical construction problem and in July, council was advised there was a potential issue relating to seismic design strength.

Work on the site was suspended in September 2019, while an engineering design review was undertaken.

As a result of that review, it was confirmed that the structure design did not meet the required standard of seismic resistance; and that structure and foundation strengthening would be required.

Construction of the 550-carpark building was abandoned in June 2020, following expert advice that the cost of addressing the structure's seismic design deficiencies would be prohibitive.

Tauranga City Council's Projects, Services and Operations Committee is to receive a report on September 15, outlining progress made on the complex workstreams, which will determine the future of the abandoned Harington Street Transport Hub building.

Council infrastructure general manager Nic Johansson says a process has been developed to deal with the existing physical structure, determining the best use of the site and recovering wasted construction costs.

Matters to be reported on at Tuesday's committee meeting include options for stabilising the structure and/or site; demolition options and approach; consent amendments; the ongoing costs of securing the site; and potential mediation/legal proceedings to recover construction costs.

Regulatory matters relating to building and resource consents will be treated as a separate workstream, reflecting the need for the council Building Control Authority to function separately from the council's role as the property owner and developer.

Get rid of that poor excuse for a Mayor! Also, what's the CEO doing about it all?

Move Multi Storey to Dive Crescent

Has anyone thought about building a Multi Storey Car Park down at Dive Crescent over the railway line??? (In between Bobby's Fresh Fish Market and the Sebel Trinity Hotel) This would then utilise an area that you can't do much else with, but freeing up the existing Harrington St development for other uses. The Multi Storey Car Park could go all the way up to Cliff Road, and allow for people to walk down to town through the botanical gardens. If it is only 3 or 4 storeys high it wouldn't impact on views for the residents in Cliff Road & would make far better use of the land along Dive Crescent.
