Government officials may scour credit card payments and use facial recognition technology for contact tracing positive Covid-19 cases.

Health Minister Chris Hipkins said there was a low likelihood of community transmission, despite a woman who flew from Auckland to Sydney on July 20, then testing positive for Covid-19.

The woman believed she contracted the virus back in March and was no longer infectious.

New research shows that prolonged loneliness increased from 3.5 per cent of the New Zealand adult population before lockdown to 10.6 per cent during lockdown, before slightly falling to 8.7 per cent post-lockdown.

Two new Covid-19 cases were reported in New Zealand yesterday. Both were in managed isolation in Rotorua and had been moved to quarantine in Auckland.

Global toll

Across the world, 17,639,185 confirmed Covid-19 cases have been reported, according to Johns Hopkins University.

The United States, Brazil and India have reported the most cases with 4.5m, 2.6m and 1.6m, respectively.

To date, 680,575 people have died from the virus. Of these, 153,642 are from the US, 92,475 are from Brazil, 46,688 are from Mexico, and 46,278 are from the UK.

New Zealand remains in alert level 1. Almost all restrictions, with the exception of border measures, have been lifted.
