Armed police spotted on Takitimu Drive

UPDATE 8.40AM: Police are still on the hunt for a person with a warrant to arrest following an armed traffic stop in Tauranga.

SunLive received a couple of reports from members of the public saying they spotted armed police pulling a vehicle over on Takitimu Drive, near Cambridge Road, earlier this morning.

"Staff became aware of person with a warrant for their arrest who was believed to have been in a vehicle seen driving on Takitimu Drive," says a police spokesperson.

"Staff did a routine traffic stop of the vehicle.

"The person was not located."

EARLIER:

Reports are coming in of armed police on Takitimu Drive this morning.

A caller to the SUNLIVE news hotline says armed police have pulled over a vehicle on Takitimu Drive, near the Cambridge Road off-ramp.

"Its on the side as you head towards Tauranga."

Another SunLive reader has emailed in to says there were two police cars, with an officer holding a rifle.

"As we were driving, there were two cop cars with an officer holding a rife to a car that was parked," says Haydon Appleton.

"They were all parked on the side of the road. It was heading towards Tauranga before the underbridge on Takitimu Drive."

. . . Armed responses now we may as well just arm the Police and get with the times. It's no good putting off the inevitable and it is obviously necessary or we wouldn't be seeing the big rise in armed Police situations.
