Countdown in Katikati is now open after being closed for the last 24 hours following complaints of odours and illness.

The Main Road supermarket closed on Wednesday following reports of odours and illness from the new flooring being laid in the building.

Countdown owner's Progressive Enterprises communications manager Luke Schepen says the supermarket was closed as a precautionary measure.

'We had to wait for tests and assessments to be carried out.

'The actual issue itself is the laying down of the new floor, so there was reports of odours and illness and the sorts.

'We needed to do some testing in terms of the actual store environment.”

Katikati's Jensen's Take Note and Post Shop owner Sue Jensen says has not heard any complaints of illness from residents.

'We actually haven't, but the few people that have talked about it around me have said they really sort of needed to because of the smell of the glue.

'I happened to comment that I wouldn't have been able to work in that environment because I'm asthmatic if I was an employee there, and there are probably a lot of people the same.”

Katikati's Four Square experienced a rush in customers due to Countdown closure.

Four Square owner Foodstuffs' group communications director Antoinette Shallue says more people than normal used the outlet while Countdown was closed.

'Local owner-operator Peter Jones is proud of the way his staff and suppliers have pulled out all the stops to ensure the shelves remain well-stocked and able to accommodate local residents' grocery needs during this time.”

Luke would like to apologise to Countdown customers for the closure.
