Lone boat found in Gulf

Police are searching for the owners of a five metre aluminium boat, which was found floating in the Hauraki Gulf, about two to three miles north of Tiri Tiri Island.

The boat was discovered, without anyone on board, around 11.55am on Friday, April 6.

The Police and Coastguard received reports of an overturned vessel in the area.

The Police helicopter Eagle carried out an extensive search before locating the boat with its bow sticking out of the water.

The boat was towed back to Gulf Harbour by the Police launch Deodar and will be taken to Auckland where it will be kept in a secure storage unit until the owner is found.

Police says there is nothing which causes them to believe the discovery of the overturned vessel is suspicious.

Anyone missing a dark blue, five metre aluminium boat with a 40 horse power Mercury outboard motor is being asked to contact Rodney Police on 09 426 4555.

Police say the vessel is fitted with a VHF radio that is mounted on the right hand side of the cabin.
