People are being warned to expect an increased police presence in the Western Bay of Plenty, including Tauranga City.

The country moved to alert level 4 at 11.59pm last night to try and combat the COVID-19 coronavirus, and everyone must stay at home apart from essential workers.

Police were given more powers yesterday to be able to order any person to stop any activity that contributes to the spread of COVID-19.

Western Bay of Plenty area commander Inspector Clifford Paxton says police remain focused on maintaining public safety, security and order.

'There will be an increased police presence in our communities and we will adapt and change how we police in response to this situation.

"We're asking that everyone commits to keeping themselves and their community safe by adhering to the restrictions imposed. The message is simple: stay home, save lives.

'Stay calm, be compassionate and kind to one another, have confidence that police and our partners are here to support our communities.”
