A 5.9 magnitude earthquake occurred offshore in the Bay of Plenty last night.

Geonet reports that the quake happened at 11.05pm, 110km north or Te Araroa, at a depth of 12km.

GeoNet says the earthquake wasn't widely felt, but it is the largest to strike New Zealand this year.

Over 380 people along the east coast from the Auckland to Hawkes Bay regions reported feeling it, mostly as a light or weak quake.
