Tech spark for Bay teen

Aquinas College student Daniel Collins has proved himself one of New Zealand's top young inventors after he won the supreme award in the Bright Sparks national competition.

Daniel Collins' invention the microLOG has won the national Bright Sparks competition for 2009.

The 16 year old built a device called a microLOG that records data from sensors which then transmits via Twitter to a mobile phone as a tweet. The Bright Spark judges were particularly impressed with Daniel's integration of wireless technology with a social networking site.
Bright Sparks judge Ross Petersen has been delighted with the calibre of entries this year.
'The standard has been even higher than last year, and that's saying something. It's inspiring that students this young are already carving a niche for themselves in the hi-tech arena and it bodes well for the future of New Zealand's hi-tech industry.”
