Updated: Firefighters have isolated the cylinder leaking acetylene gas at Edgecumbe College this morning.
Crews are no longer at the scene, says Fire and Emergency northern communications shift manager Paul Radden.
An Edgecumbe College staff member says people are allowed back in the school building.
"The evacuation has been lifted, and the gas leak has been dealt with."
Earlier: A Bay of Plenty school has been evacuated this morning following gas leak reports.
Firefighters and police are at Edgecumbe College, where people have been evacuated from the school and surrounding areas.
"We are assisting FENZ following a reported gas leak at the college, which has caused it to be evacuated," says a police spokesperson.
"Police received the report at 10am."
'There has been an acetylene gas leak from a cylinder, and the school was evacuated at about 10am,” says Fire and Emergency northern communications senior dispatcher Colin Underdown.
He says fire crews are currently awaiting contractors to turn the power off.
'Fire will use a positive pressure ventilation fan to blow gas out of the building into the atmosphere.”
It is unknown at this stage how long the school will be evacuated for.
