New Zealanders are increasingly better off under this government as wages rise and families have more disposable income, Finance Minister Grant Robertson says.

Statistics NZ reported today that average household disposable incomes after housing costs rose 4.9 per cent in 2019.

This was the highest rise in four years and came as Stats NZ said average housing costs were unchanged over the year, while wages rose.

'This Government is helping Kiwis with the cost of living through a strong economy that is seeing wages rise and more New Zealanders in work,” Grant says.

'Our record of 4% unemployment, decade-high wage increases and steady economic growth in the face of global headwinds means Kiwis are better off under our economic plan.

'Today's data showed New Zealanders with mortgages are particularly better off. The government is helping more Kiwis get into their first homes, while building consents are at their highest level since the 1970s.

'Today's data also showed, 46,000 people were lifted out of poverty in 2019 based on moving above the measure of 50 per cent of disposable income after housing costs.

The median household disposable income after housing costs has risen 10 per cent over the past two years. In 2017, this measure had fallen 1.8 per cent.

'This is further evidence that the economy is in good shape. We're in a good position to manage the economic impact of the coronavirus, due to our strong management of the Government books and the solid underlying economy,” Grant says.

Whose leg are you pulling? All I've seen is the cost of living go up, with less left in the bank. Bring on the elections.

The statistics are there but there are those that choose to ignore them in Election year. There will be a lot of misinformation come through in election year as political parties seek to discredit each other.

… factor simply isn't there, even if the statistics say it should be. And there isn't much point in raising your standard of living if you don't have the security to enjoy it. Why is gun crime increasing with impunity and the Government soft on criminal behaviour by gangs?

what a load of crap??

More lies form these socialist dreamers. 1. Housing has never been more unaffordable in NZ as what it is now. Rents are also going through the roof. 2. Cost of food (especially meat & fish) and cost of living is also at record highs. 3. no tax relief from Labour, it's a case of them gouging us for as much as they can. 4. Multi-millions of dollars wasted on a grand socialist gun-grab (forced confiscation, mis-labled as a 'gun buyback') under the guise of making the public 'safer'. What a complete failure that has been, with - surprise surprise - gang violence and other crime now spiralling out of control as we have seen in the last few weeks. If anything we are now in fact LESS SAFE than ever before. Jacinda's gross exploitation of a tragedy for political gain, eroding civil rights & liberties.
