Bike Month is back in February with a month-long calendar of more than 20 pedal-powered events, activities and workshops suitable for all ages and abilities.

A jam-packed programme including urban trail rides, kids' activities, cycle skills sessions and bike maintenance workshops ensures there's something for everyone across the Western Bay of Plenty, from regular cyclists to those wanting to get back on two wheels.

Bike Month kicks off on Saturday, February 1, with the Tauranga Moana Leisurely Ride – a free guided cycle with a Maori historian to pa sites around Tauranga.

Then on Sunday, February 2, there's a chance for kids to get their wheels spinning with a Kids Learn to Ride session.

Sport Bay of Plenty's recreation team leader Sonia Lynds says Bike Month is a great way for people to active and have fun.

'The aim of Bike Month is to offer free or low cost activities that encourage people to get back on their bikes, build biking confidence and discover some of the great cycle trails in our region.

'Some other events this year include Cycle Savvy skills sessions and a have-a-go day at Tauranga BMX, as well as basic cycle maintenance workshops and the Katikati family friendly time trial.”

Adaptive equipment is available for several Bike Month events this year to help participants with physical or visual impairments get involved.

Sonia says the benefits of cycling are numerous.

'Cycling is a fun way to get fit, and it's a great form of sustainable transport that can help you beat the woes of being stuck in traffic.”

To encourage more cycle commuting Go By Bike Day is also back on Wednesday, February 26 and people across Tauranga are encouraged to commute to work via two wheels. Pit stops with free refreshments and spot prizes will be located along the main commuter trails between 6.45am and 8.45am.

Schools are encouraged to take part by hosting their own Go By Bike Day between February 24 and 29, with every registered school receiving a $50 voucher thanks to My Ride Mount Maunganui.

Bike Month also coincides with the NZ Transport Agency's Aoteraoa Bike Challenge, a month-long free competition open to all organisations, including businesses and clubs, that's all about seeing which workplaces can get the most people riding for just 10 minutes or more.
