Shards of a broken thermometer have triggered the recall of a popular brand of english muffins.

Manufacturer Goodman Fielder believed some pieces of the thermometer may be found in packets of Quality Baker brand Muffin Splits Cheese.

The broken shards are believed to be made of plastic and metal.

There was no mercury in the thermometer and no risk of mercury poisoning.

Affected packets are marked with a best before date of January 3, 2020.

The Ministry for Primary Industries says anyone who bought a pack of muffin splits that fits the description should not consume them.

There have not been any reports of injury, but anyone who has eaten one of the muffin splits and is concerned about their health is urged to seek medical advice.
