Fire fighters battled to get a grass fire under control in the Coromandel last night.
Locals believe that the two-hectare blaze was caused by people letting off fireworks.
Emergency services were called to Wharf Rd in Colville about 9.25pm. Fire crews from Coromandel, Hamilton, Colville, Kennedy Bay, Matarangi, and Port Jackson came to fight the vegetation fire which is now contained.

In total, around 60 firefighters and two helicopters using monsoon buckets were involved. The fire destroyed two hectares of land on Wharf Rd and was put out by midnight.
Two helicopters are monitoring the area checking for remaining fire hotspots this morning, and ground crews remain on site.

Principal Rural Fire officer Paul Shaw said he's disappointed a fire ban for the peninsula imposed before Christmas isn't being taken seriously.
"You don't need to use fireworks to have a good time on New Year's Eve, please refrain from using them."
He said all of the firefighters in the region are volunteers.
"So every time they get dragged out of bed they're doing it for nothing, they're doing it for their community."
The Thames-Coromandel District is under a complete fire ban. This means absolutely no open fires of any kind, and all permits are now null and void. Barbecues and some other cooking methods are still accepted, so please visit www.checkitsalright.nz for full details.
