Kahawai bonanza on schedule

Keen surfcasters are being advised to get their tackle ready as the second ITM Kahawai World Cup Surfcasting Bonanza takes place on Papamoa Beach this weekend.

Organised the by the Rotary Club of Papamoa and the Western Bay Surfcasting Club, more than 300 surfcasters are expected to be trying to catch the heaviest Kahawai.


The ITM Kahawai World Cup Surfcasting Bonanza is taking place on Papamoa Beach this weekend.

The winning angler will receive $10,000 and the Kahawai World Cup.

Organisers say there are heaps of other prizes for the heaviest Kahawai caught each day, mystery weight Kahawai, and spot prizes.

Fraser McCullough says there is also another $1000 cash prize for the successful team along with a trophy and a day's fishing on the Ultimate Brandy's Luxury one day charter.

The long range weather forecast is looking good for a great weekend, and Bill Hohepa‘s fishing calendar indicates it is a good time for fishing, says Fraser.

The event starts on Friday night at Gordon Spratt Reserve for registrations and late entries, followed by a briefing at 8pm.

The first cast will take place on Saturday at 7am with fishing closing at 3pm and the shut off period for weigh-in at 4pm.

Fishing will re-start on Sunday at 7am, closing at 3pm and weigh-in at 4pm.
