There will be a bit of a clash of codes at Omanu Beach on Saturday afternoon as nude bike riders and surf life savers both start events at Surf Road.
The Nude Bike Ride, which organiser Andrew Pointon says is expected to produce a field of 50-60 riders for the first Tauranga event, will start from the beach near the Surf Road car park at 2.30pm, pedalling along the beach towards Papamoa.
Naked riders are heading to Omanu Beach on one of the surf club's busiest days of the year.
The Omanu Surf Life Saving Club will also have a crowd on the beach on Saturday afternoon.
The club's masters and senior competition begins at 1.30pm, with the last event being the Ian Porteous Memorial Ironman.
Junior surf is competing on Sunday.
The club doesn't really have any comment on the bike ride, says junior surf captain Jonathan York.
'It's all a public area an there's not really much we can do about it – we will be too busy concentrating on events,” says Jonathan.
Andrew Pointon didn't know it was going to be a busy surf club weekend when scheduling the naked bike ride.
'I spoke to the club captain and he didn't say anything about it when I went down there a few weeks ago and I gave him some posters to put up in the club rooms,' says Andrew.
'He didn't mention that; there's going to be a good crowd then.”
The Nude Bike Ride is an international event celebrating pedal power in preference to oil use. In Portland, Oregon, there are expected to be 5000 naked or near-naked painted participants. About 1200 are expected to pedal down Pall Mall in London, and there are about 100 expected to take part in Takaka.
Cycling along the beach from Omanu to Papamoa is expected to take about half an hour.
The forecast is for fine weather with a gentle tail wind.
'Which will be quite good,” says Andrew.
People will be advised to take their clothes with them.
Those that use the supplied body paint can wash off in the sea at Papamoa, says Andrew.
'There will be spot prizes, because it is a fun event,” says Andrew.
'Enjoy the ride and think of the cause.
'Do they really want oil back on our beaches because they want to empty out the Arctic and when the Antarctic treaty expires in 2048 they will want to mine that.”
China is currently producing a car every three seconds, says Andrew.

So we can have paint in the sea instead of oil???? what about all the pollution from all the CRAP bicycles that are produced and thrown away every year..... and all the plastic do-dads fitted to those bicycles and worn by those cyclists... I have never seen as much plastic crap produced for one activity as what is sold on line for cyclists...drink bottles, accessories, helmets, clothing ( have you ever seen the chemical process involved in making Elastene...Spandex, Lycra...... Phosgene gas, and oil based polymers... All of which gets chucked and replaced regularly....in the name of fashion. Don't preach about cars until you have cleaned up your own back yard.
WTF

Heard it all before, all those nudists and collateral weirdos can rationalise their behaviour in so many ways. They will have a counter argument for anything a reasonable person will put forward. "Its all innocent" "Nothing sexual". Just like a criminal will lie about everything to get away with thier crime, these people will say anything to justify their actions. In my day if a guy exposed himself to anyone, they would be rushed to jail, and labeled a sex offender for the rest of their lives. What has changed. Now they seem to be able to do it legally by joining a group, and calling it good fun. I wouldnt want my grandaughters to be "exposed" to naked guys. What makes those guys think that anyone wants to see their naked body, the only one getting a perverted thrill out of it would be themselves. Now in fear of being labeled a sexist, womens bodies can be beautiful. But I still would not want my grandaughters being exposed to naked women either. There can only be negative reactions and results from such behaviour. I am a man by the way. Why dont the police come in and carry out some arrests.
Of Course

These exhibitionists will no doubt actually drive to Omanu. I am beggared to see how a few saggy boobs and scrotums peddling along a strip of beach will have any effect on oil drilling.. Pathetic.. Really it's just a day out for exhibitionists.. I just hope that Police are there to take immediate action to the complaints from parents.
Tolerance and support for activism

I hear what you say, CC8, but biking, compared to other transport, wins hands down when it comes to being environmentally friendly. Also, you will see very little Spandex/Lycra on Saturday. As for people with Victorian time attitude, either get a life or simply stay away for that half hour if you find nudity offensive. The bike riders ought to be applauded for their commitment to bring awareness to pedal power in preference to oil use.
wrinkly

I wouldn't mind if there were nice young attractive bodies on show but who wants to look at a load of wrinkly old todgers and titties like a deflated balloon? Why on earth would you want to exhibit this? It's not good and it's not clever. It's just sad and pathetic.

I in no way condone naked exhibitionism, but I'm also intrigued by the way many of the critics posted here have specifically mentioned ball bags, saggy boobs, scrotums, todgers and titties, suggesting their focus is particularly one-eyed (no pun intended). It was the genius Michelangelo who said ' What spirit is so empty and blind, that it cannot recognize the fact that the foot is more noble than the shoe, and skin more beautiful than the garment with which it is clothed?' However, I personally think this particular protest is totally inappropriate along Omanu Beach on a Sunday arvo.
Victorian?

Well SpeakUp, no one has accused me of being Victorian. I am a member of Sea Shepherd, and follow various other activist groups, but not yet have I seen them overtly naked to further their cause. I applaud those that follow their principles, to support a worthy cause, but why do it naked. Just because I mentioned "grandfather" you accuse me of being Victorian. I married young and my granddaughters are 2 and 4. Have you given a thought that there may be some that arent activists but just perverts who are allying themselves to the ride. I think before you start denigrating the reasonable persons point of view you should stop your bigoted attitude and consider that in this modern and liberated society the rights of the young, weak, elderley and infirmed should be protected by everyone. Where in this world at a time when sexual misconduct not just with children but adults, is a problem, should we justify naked men overtly exposing them selves to the public. I think the Victorian attitude is that children should be seen and not heard, and are fair game for any adult to do with them what they wish. I think SpeakUp you should ShutUp and let the police handle this event, in line with the law of our land which we should all be abiding, and not those who just think that they can break it for any reaon they either rationalise or justify. As I know of what is going on I and my granddaughters will not be on the beach, but there are a lot who dont know, and will be faced with this.

sick exhibitionist behavior that achieves nothing but a display of lack of morals. It's just a bunch of men without boundaries seeking attention for themselves.Indeed, why don't the police come in and clap the lot of them in jail. Naked.
Ostrich day as well

I bet you didn't know its ostrich day at that part of the beach on Sunday too, so adults and the kids will all be able to put your heads in the sand as the bikes go by.If they are all perverts on bikes then just think they are off the streets for a couple of hours now that's a plus.If kids are going to be affected by some nakedness I feel real sorry for the parents if that's the way they bring them up they obviously must never be seen naked by their own child ..we are all the same..jeez I was even born naked.Get a life don't go to the beach while its on, & I bet none of you were any way ...just a winge winge bunch of more politically correct nanny's from our over protected nanny state

Get a grip!! There is a vast difference between children seeing their parents whom they are relaxed with nude in a safe environment and a group of naked people in a non controlled situation.
How about

Complain to the police on the day about obscene behaviour then they will have to investigate and perhaps stop the whole thing, I know I wouldn't let my kids any where near the place. Saggy balls yuck.......
