The Tauranga i-SITE Visitor Information Centre is moving to a new site themed in what Tourism Bay of Plenty described as Tauranga Moana's ‘DNA'.
The information hub will be trading from 103 The Strand, Tauranga from 8.30am on today.
The site will be officially opened by a dawn Karakia Whakatuwhera (blessing) by local hapū Ngāi Tamarāwaho kaumātua (elder) Tamati Tata.
"The Tauranga i-SITE proudly showcases to visitors who we are and what makes our place unique," says Tourism Bay of Plenty Chair Laurissa Cooney.
"The site will be a meeting place for locals and manuhiri (visitors) to share information and have the authentic interactions we know visitors are increasingly seeking.
'The region's DNA was made known to us in 2018 by global place-making experts Destination Think! through extensive research and tourism industry, community and iwi consultation.
'The new Tauranga i-SITE Visitor Information Centre will be a manifestation of this research and Tourism Bay of Plenty's journey into destination management. For us, this place will be about telling the stories of our region to our manuhiri.”

The down sizing

Of the Tauranga I-site is another nail in the coffin for the CBD. Even Council owned organisations have no confidence in downtown Tauranga and are going to The Mount to set up a building to cover everything the CBD I-site does as well as service the cruise ships although this service is only required 6 months or less of the year. If the Council has no confidence in the CBD then it will continue, as it is doing now, to shrivel up and die in very quick time. Maybe this new Council will stop talking and start doing although with a deputy Mayor that is anti the CBD I don't like our chances.
