Burnt out car still waiting for a tow

The burnt out car at McLaren Falls.

The remains of a burnt out car still linger at McLaren Falls Park, waiting for its owner to get rid of it.

Residents have reported seeing charred vehicle for a number of weeks at the popular falls.

Why has it been there for so long? The Western Bay of Plenty District Council says it's up to the owner of the vehicle to remove the car.

'Council has the power to remove the vehicle under the Local Government Act 1974,” says council's compliance support team leader Greer Golding.

'The time that it takes for a vehicle to be removed varies, it depends what category vehicle that it is. Once we have assessed the category that establishes the grounds for removal.

'Generally the car will be removed by council or the vehicle owner within 2-10 days from the complaint being received by council.

'If people are concerned about an abandoned vehicle they should contact council either by phone, email or online and there will be service request raised for the vehicle to be inspected and assessed.”

I contacted the WBOPDC on Monday (11th) and they advised that a scrap dealer has been instructed to tow it. Probably later this week or early next. In fairness, Police were involved and nothing could be done until they completed their enquires. Police advised that they had no further interest. The fact remains, this area is prone to having cars dumped and although there is a process that has to be followed, when there is no plates, rego and warrant out of date is the owner really going to remove it - Yeah Right. I agree with Walbuck.

How wrong you are. There was a badly damaged Ute, no registration or WOF, abandoned near Fergusson Park , several weeks ago. It took numerous phone calls and emails to the Police and Council to get it removed. It was in a dangerous place for visibility pulling out of a street and homes. It was there for over three weeks before finally being removed.
