Western Bay focuses on active ageing

A week dedicated to preparing for older age will be a feature of November in the Western Bay.

Western Bay of Plenty District Council is partnering with Age Concern Tauranga to host the inaugural Active Ageing Week, from November 4-10.

The week includes free workshops in Te Puke, Katikati and Waihi Beach and Have a Go activities around the Western Bay District.

The week isn't just for people in the 55-plus age group, it's for everyone in the ageing circle including whanau, carers, friends and support agencies.

The week's activities focus on ways older people can live their best life - getting involved and connected to their communities, having the confidence to live independently and knowing where and who to go to for assistance.

Age Concern Tauranga Manager Tanya Smith says ageing independently is very important for older people and the week will include advice on how to achieve this.

'We all want to live independently, but as we age, some assistance may be needed.

'Workshops during the week include strategies for older people to maintain independence and wellbeing and to stay connected with their communities. Having conversations with family and carers about preparing for the future can make a huge difference in later life.”

The week's events include groups and organisations that are available to help, support, facilitate and encourage older people to live the fullest life possible.

Council's Community Relationship Adviser Glenn Ayo says Active Ageing Week is an opportunity for Council to step into the senior space and make a positive difference.

'We hope the week will encourage those older people who may not get out and about a lot, to come and join in our activities – meet new people and find out what opportunities there are in their communities.

'The week is a real opportunity for Council, alongside Age Concern, to reach out to our older residents and establish an ongoing supportive relationship.”

Have a Go activities are in Waihi Beach, Katikati, Te Puke, Te Puna and Omokoroa.

These are organised by the Western Bay District libraries, the Katikati Community Centre, A Friends Place in Waihi Beach and Sport Bay of Plenty.

Three free workshops during the week will be in Te Puke, Katikati and Waihi Beach. No registration required and drop in at anytime.

Workshop topics include:

-Wills and Enduring Power of Attorney

-Driving safely

-Home Safety

-Staying physically active

-Home ownership and renting

-Benefits and allowances.
