Charges are pending after a brief police chase in the Western Bay of Plenty ended with a man, wearing nothing but underwear, being arrested.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says they saw police, including the dog unit, screaming up State Highway 29 through Tauriko.

Another caller says they spotted police chasing a vehicle through Bethlehem towards the Wairoa Bridge.

'There are at least five police cars parked 500m north of the Wairoa Bridge,” says a photographer at the scene.

'One man, seen only wearing his undies, was taken away in handcuffs.”

A police spokesperson says police observed a stolen vehicle on Belk Road near SH29 and initiated a pursuit.

'After a brief pursuit spikes were deployed and the car came to a stop at Wairoa Bridge near State Highway 2.

'One person has been taken into custody and will appear in court tomorrow pending charges.”
