Strong smell of gas near Tauranga CBD

UPDATED 3.13PM: Firefighers are taking a look around Cliff Road this afternoon following a strong smell of gas.

Fire Emergency New Zealand northern fire communications shift manager Danile Nicholson says they received a call of a strong smell of gas coming from the Cliff Road area.

"A work site had been evacuated and cordons were established. We are taking a look around to see where the smell is coming from."

The smell is disappating around the Cliff Road area, but people are reporting gas smells along Devonport Road.

People are reporting a strong smell of gas in the CBD this afternoon.

SunLive reporters can smell the gas in the newsroom on The Strand.

Other people says there is a gas leak on Cliff Road.

Firefighters have been called.

Cordons are also in the area on Cliff Road.

Other people have reported smelling the gas on Devonport Road.
