Police chase abandoned ‘due to traffic’

UPDATED 10.10AM: Police are still working to locate a vehicle involved in a pursuit earlier today.

Police were seen chasing a vehicle along Hewletts Road, towards Bayfair, just before 9am.

"(There was) a big police chase going down Hewetts Road,” says a SunLive reader who messaged us on Facebook.

A police spokesperson says a vehicle of interest was spotted about 8.45am.

'The driver failed to stop for police.

'Police followed the vehicle for less than two minutes, but abandoned due to traffic.

'Police are still working to locate the vehicle.”

EARLIER:

Police have been spotted chasing a vehicle through Mount Maunganui this morning.

A SunLive reader messaged us on Facebook to say they saw police cars chasing a vehicle down Hewletts Road.

"(There was) a big police chase going down Hewetts Road.

"Chasing a black Subaru Impreza WRX, heading towards Bayfair."

SunLive has contacted police for more information and will update this story when we have something more.

Unlike in the movies, cops cannot risk mayhem on crowded streets. Human life and safety has to be the overriding consideration. Hopefully, the vehicle is known and will be picked up at some point. Confiscation should be mandatory for any car that flees Police. Penalties should be increased for people who are caught after fleeing Police; they put innocent people at risk.
