The death of an infant in the Bay of Plenty is being treated as "unexplained".

Police were advised of the baby's death in Whakatane at 11am on Wednesday.

"The death is currently being treated as unexplained," says a police spokesperson.

"An autopsy will be carried out in the next few days."
