As part of the 2019 Trustpower Photographic Exhibition, Downtown Tauranga is bringing together five winning images from the 2019 Hitachi City Art Exhibition.

'This exhibition also celebrates our sister city relationship with Hitachi, Japan,” says a statement from Downtown Tauranga.

'Last year the Trustpower Photographic Exhibition winners were featured in Hitachi City and we are reciprocating in 2019 by displaying their images in our city.

'Tauranga's Sister City relationship was created to promote goodwill and mutual understanding between the citizens of each nation and contribute to the peace of the world.

'Hitachi became a Sister City of Tauranga more than 30 years ago. The ongoing friendship between the two city councils has resulted in 3 yearly exchanges and continuing cultural and learning opportunities.”

The exhibition is free to the public and is a partnership exhibition between Downtown Tauranga, Our Place, Multicultural Tauranga, Tauranga City Council, Tuskany Agency, Creative Bay of Plenty, Education Tauranga and Sun Media.

It will be officially opened by Mayor Greg Brownless on Monday April 15 at 9.30am.

Throughout the month of the exhibition, there is an opening invitation to the public to make a paper crane.

Each paper crane will be hung in the Our Place marquee – to create a ‘senbazuru' or 1000 paper cranes as a public art installation and symbol of peace to celebrate the sister city connections.

After the opening ceremony, the first paper crane making session will take place on Tuesday April 16 from 10.30am to 11.30am, under the marquee at Our Place, with a second session on Wednesday April 17.

The exhibition will run from April 15 to May 10 2019.
