Swine flu hits BOP

A Tauranga teenager was last night confirmed as having the region's first confirmed case of swine flu.

The teen has no history of overseas travel nor has she had any contact with a confirmed case of swine flu.
She went to her doctor last week with flu-like symptoms, and was sent home with what was thought to be seasonal flu.
Laboratory tests of a swab confirmed influenza A H1Ni late Saturday and public health staff arranged visits with family, flatmates and staff at work says Bay of Plenty medical officer of health Dr Phil Shoemack.
A 15- month-old child holidaying in New Zealand with his American family has also tested positive for swine flu.
When the child was taken to Taupo Hospital emergency department, the family had been in New Zealand for five days.
The family was tracked down at a relative's home in Wellington and the public health follow-up work is being carried out by Hutt Valley staff.
The World Health Organisation declared the influenza A H1N1 swine flu outbreak a pandemic last week.
The timing of the WHO declaration of a pandemic is 'spot on”, in terms of how the outbreak is progressing in New Zealand, says Phil. He says people need to be prepared for more widespread transmission of swine flu.
In most cases, people with influenza can safely recover at home and will not need to see their doctors or emergency clinics. However, people should seek medical advice if their condition worsens.
Seeking medical advice is particularly important for people with underlying medical problems, who are at higher risk of complications from influenza.
The Ministry of Health advises people who have travelled overseas and developed flu symptoms within seven days of their return to contact a doctor or Healthline (0800 611 116), and stay away from school or work.
At this time, the Ministry of Health is not recommending cancelling or postponing overseas travel during the upcoming school holidays, which start on Saturday, July 4.
