One person has been arrested following a firearms incident in Bellevue, Tauranga today.

A person was reported to have discharged a firearm on a property neighbouring Bellevue Primary School.

A firearm was later located at that property, says Western Bay of Plenty Area Commander, Inspector Clifford Paxton.

"We understand this has been a distressing incident for the Bellevue community, especially the staff and students at nearby schools.

"I want to reassure the community that we are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident.

"The staff at Bellevue Primary School did a fantastic job of following lockdown protocols and ensuring the safety of staff and pupils."

Clifford says the person police have in custody is an adult and no one was injured in the incident.

"We are aware of alleged threats made toward another school in the area.

"However this morning's incident was entirely unrelated."

He says police are following up on these alleged threats.

"We are currently speaking to the individual who has been arrested and will provide more information when it is available."
