A tourist from the United Kingdom died at Ocean Beach in Tairua.

Andrew Massey, aged 68, from Kent, had been swimming with family members when he got into trouble in the water shortly before 6pm on Saturday.

"Mr Massey was brought to shore and CPR was attempted but sadly he was unable to be resuscitated," says a statement from police.

"Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones."

Andrew's death will be referred to the Coroner.
