Taylor Scott played the round of his life to take out the major honour at the MetLife 5 Course Classic that finished at Tauranga Golf Club today.

The 22-year-old from Ngaruawahia Golf Club shot a remarkable one-under 69 at Tauranga for 49 stableford points to clinch the men's Division One competition by 10 points from Tipene Wairepo from Te Kowhai.

Marian Kingham from Hamilton's St Andrew's was the best performed of the top women's division, with a four-round combined stableford haul of 186 points to win by five from Sue Faulke of Boulcott's Farm in Wellington.

It was a roller-coaster week for 12-handicapper Taylor.

He went from the disappointment of shooting 97 for just 26 points at Omokoroa in blustery conditions on Monday, to jump back into contention with his then best round of 76 at Te Puke on Tuesday before two more solid rounds finished off by his sensational round of 69.

'They were pretty harsh conditions day one and I just didn't play well,” says Taylor.

'Next day at Te Puke I started playing well, striking the ball and putting well, and had 44 points to play my way back into it.

'Then played even to my handicap at the Mount with 84 for 36 points. Yesterday at Omanu was a game of two halves. I was out in 45 for 16 points then 34, two-under par on the back, for 43 points in total.

'Today 69 off the stick, the best round of my life. It is a pretty special week for me. The organisers put on a good week, the greenkeepers were really impressive, as all the courses were in really nice condition with awesome greens.”

Taylor's heroics put the seal on a unique golf tournament with nearly 200 golfers from 82 New Zealand clubs and eight overseas countries taking on the five courses of Tauranga, Mount Maunganui, Omanu, Te Puke and Omokoroa.

Joanne Coates-Reid, Operations Manager for naming rights sponsors MetLifecare retirement villages, was delighted with how the five days of golf have gone.

'The week has been absolutely fabulous. We couldn't have asked for better weather other than the wind at the start.

'Really the biggest thing for us has been the community spirit that everyone has displayed during the week, the way they have enjoyed each other's company, made new friends and learnt a little bit more about our slice of heaven here in the Bay of Plenty.”
