Birds flying from wetlands near Bethlehem are suspected to have hit power lines causing a loss of electricity supply in the area on Thursday.

Powerco's Network Operations manager Phil Marsh says the suspected bird strike happened about 6.30am and affected about 460 customers.

'Supply was restored shortly after 8am.”

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says they reported power lines sparking to emergency services earlier in the day.

They say the lines on the corner of Te Paeroa Road were sparking.
