Misjudged tidal flow compromises yacht departure

Crew are assessing the damage.

A yacht has collided with a wooden pile while departing from Bridge Wharf.

Vessel Works manager Phil Wardale says its captain has spent the morning assessing the damage sustained to the vessel.

'While departing to head back up to Auckland this morning the captain underestimated the tidal flow on the still incoming tide and the yacht connected with a wooden pile at the end of Bridge Wharf.”

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline had initially reported the incident as happening within the Marine Precinct.

The caller understood the yacht had been dropped from the Vessel Works travel-lift, however Phil denies this.

'The yacht had been successfully lifted back into the water by the Vessel Works travel-lift on Thursday and remained berthed in the precinct's lifting bay for two nights while it was being loaded with equipment by its crew.”

He says the accident is unfortunate.

'The yacht's captain is now assessing the damage to the vessel and the next steps.”
