A 12-year-old driver and four teenage friends led police on a chase in a stolen car on Monday afternoon.

But the joyride ended with spiked tyres and five arrests on a busy Hamilton road.

The chase began after police were alerted to a car speeding in St Andrews shortly before 4pm, Waikato police Senior Sergeant Mike Henwood said.

"During the pursuit it was discovered that the vehicle had been recently stolen," Henwood said.

The car was spiked on River Rd and it ran to a stop near Thames St.

A resident said Thames St was blocked by a car with a flat tyre around 4pm, but it had since reopened.

Two of the passengers were 13, one was 14 and the other 15, Henwood said.

All five have been referred to Youth Aid.

Time for accountability

Where are the parents. Maybe time to hold them accountable. Maybe they get house arrest, etc . The system of slapping kids on the hands and not making anyone truly accountable needs to stop. When the parents also held accountable it may change. If parents can,t control the kids then , time to establish reform schools and accountability. Not put into an institution to play games but to learn to do chores and to respect people. Kids need direction and if not getting at home, make parents pay the price as well for no direction as well.

Is it not well past
